Painting and Drawing with Iliya Mirochnik

Where we will be

The residence for this retreat is The Alberta Petite Hotel, in the Alberta Arts District of North Portland. This is a fantastic neighborhood for galleries, cafes, and the quirky PDX vibe. The residence will be the main hub for the workshop, and we will use it for studio workspace, lessons, and any gatherings of participants.

We will work to make sure this space and is as comfortable (and enjoyable!) as possible for everyone!

What we’ll do

Paint and draw, mostly. But also explore, learn, meet people, and look at beautiful places.

Classes will be scheduled Monday through Friday for each week of the retreat. 10am-4pm (with a break for lunch) is the tentative class time, though this does depend on the day’s lesson and/or location.

Participants are welcome to work in whichever medium they prefer, or a variety of media. This retreat can be about developing your current body of work or trying something completely new. By keeping the number of students on the small side, we will make sure everyone gets in-depth and personal instruction.

Also this!

We are not limited to a prearranged schedule—plans can change depending on interest, weather, unforeseen acts of God, and who knows what else. We will operate organically and do our best to make sure everyone gets the most out of this experience. There are many possibilities for weekend day trips, sight-seeing, museum visits and the like, but we are also open to planning any extras as a group. Let us know if you have any ideas or suggestions.

We love PDX!

  • Nature

Explore the stunning and diverse natural landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The Columbia Gorge is just a short drive away from our artist residence, and full of historical landmarks and magical things.

  • Atmosphere

Portland is a friendly city—bike and pedestrian friendly, dog friendly, vegan friendly, lovable weirdo friendly. Great for people watching, coffee, beer and hipster foods. Very Instagram-able, if that’s your thing.

  • The perfect place to paint

Or sketch or photograph or write epic poetry. Our retreat will provide an awesome backdrop and an outstanding teacher, but ultimately this is a Choose Your Own Adventure.
